Shoreline School District: reimagining AED reliability with Avive.

Shoreline School District serves a diverse, multi-campus community and prioritizes AED readiness, overseen by longtime Athletics Director Don Dalziel. Its aging AED fleet became hard to manage due to discontinued models, costly parts, and inconsistent expiration tracking, prompting the district to seek a more sustainable solution. After evaluating options, Shoreline chose Avive Connect AED®s for their rechargeable batteries, lower long-term costs, portability, and clear, confidence-building guidance for users of any training level. With 35 Avive Connect AED®s now deployed and supported by streamlined training, the district has reduced administrative burden while strengthening emergency preparedness and peace of mind across campuses.

"I believe the Avive product levels up the specificity of instructions and ease of use. The cadence provided for CPR is significantly different from what we had had with our previous unit."

“As it goes for school staff, coaches, or the general public who need to access it - I feel it’s a seamless process to access the unit and follow directions. It’s a big win for Avive and how they’ve set their product up.”

Shoreline School District serves a diverse community across two high schools, two middle schools, nine elementary schools, and multiple athletic and satellite facilities. With more than 30 AEDs deployed throughout campuses, gyms, theaters, athletic fields, and off-site events, AED readiness is an expectation. Oversight of the district’s AED program falls to Don Dalziel, Director of Athletics, who has spent over three decades with Shoreline and has long prioritized accessibility, visibility, and reliability in emergency preparedness.

Over time, Shoreline’s legacy AED fleet became increasingly difficult to manage. Units were no longer being manufactured, replacement batteries and pads were costly and hard to source, and expiration timelines varied across devices - requiring manual spreadsheets and constant monitoring. With batteries and pads nearing expiration and long-term costs rising, the district began evaluating replacement options that could simplify maintenance while remaining financially responsible.

After reviewing multiple products and state contract options, Shoreline selected Avive Connect AED®s for a district-wide upgrade. The decision was driven by Avive’s rechargeable battery system, which eliminates routine battery replacement, lowers long-term costs, and allows devices to remain fully operational even while charging. The compact, portable design made it easier to deploy AEDs not only in school buildings but also at outdoor athletic fields and off-campus events, while the clear, guided instructions and CPR cadence increased confidence that anyone, trained or untrained, could use the device in an emergency.

Today, Shoreline School District has 35 Avive Connect AED®s deployed across its campuses, supported by seamless implementation and nurse-led training using provided resources. The result is a modernized AED program that reduces administrative burden, improves reliability, and provides peace of mind for students, staff, and the broader community. As Don notes, cardiac emergencies may be rare, especially among young students, but readiness is essential at every age, and investing in accessible, dependable AED technology reflects Shoreline’s commitment to safety across all campuses.

“The long-term cost comes down because unlike other AEDs, the Avive Connect AED does not require battery replacements.”
